"Encore! Encore!" the Singing Game

"Wow, Dave: I'd say that earns you a big 'bite me'."

-- my pal Alex to my pal Dave who had just razzed her during a round of Encore, that fine party game which we played on New Year's Eve.

How does this Encore game work, you ask?  Something like this:

1. We split our people-who-are-still-friends into two teams (let's call them My team and Dave's team).

2. To start off, I draw a card from the deck and read what it wants us to sing.  Let's say it says, "so" or "sew".

3. Anyone from my time thinks of a song with either of those target words and sings at least seven words of the song, including the target word.  For example from last week:

Someone from my team:  "'So', a needle pulling thread.  'La' a note to follow 'so'..."

Someone from Dave's team:  "Each time I try to tell you, the words just come out wrong, so I have to say I love you in a song."

My teammate:  "So long, farewell, auf wieder sehen, adieu; to you, to you; to you, and you."

(Everybody, reflexively:  "la dada dah da dah da daaa.  la dada dah da daaa.")

Dave's teammate, still paying attention to the game: "I'm so hot for her, I'm so hot for her, I'm so hot for her but she's so cold..."

[Pause as my team struggles to come up with something within the 30 second limit.  And at the last moment...]

My teammate:  "So long, Frank Lloyd Wright.  All of the nights we harmonized till dawn..."

Dave's teammate:  dammit, that was what I was going to sing

Dave's other teammate:  No sweat.  I've got another one.  Uh, uhm... Crap, what was it?  Oh yeah, "You're so far away from me, so far away from me, so faaaar away from me..."

And so it goes, back and forth until one of the teams can't come up with anything.  Repeat with more rolls of the die and more cards (with words like "so/sew" or categories like, "a car make or model")

The game is annoyingly persistent.  Days later I find myself walking down the road, thinking about more songs with the word "so" in it, and any song with the word "sew".

Whatcha got?

"So Lonely" by The Police:

Well, someone told me yesterday
That when you throw your love away
You act as if you just don't care
You look as if you're going somewhere
But I just can't convince myself
I couldn't live with no one else
And I can only play that part
And sit and nurse my broken heart
So lonely, so lonely, so lonely, so lonely
I feel so lonely...

[editor note from Phil: Fik, don't forget the "duhn duhn! duhn duhn! chords between the pairs of "so lonely"s. And I hope this is just a song reference, and not a statement of your condition.]

Don't Stand So Close To Me
The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
What's So Funny about Peace Love and Understanding

and I'm sure there is a song like 'So Much Love'. There has to be.
Sounds like a fun game. Especially combined with alcohol

And I ran, I ran so far away...
So in love are we two, no one else will ever do...
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly...
I'm so lonesome I could die...

Dammit. I'll be doing this all weekend.
