Pool at the Green Room

The dude in the rugby shirt is my friend Jonathan.  He does physics for a living, so pool with him can get a bit deliberate.  Fortunately, there's always shuffleboard.

Green Room Durham.  A bloody fine place for a beer and billiards.

Wow. I've never been there, but years ago, I had some friends who practically fetishized the place. I always pictured it as a wondrous place full of adventure and surprise. How odd that it's just a bar.

oh, but it's more than "just a bar". they have great beer, great pool tables, and a kick-ass shuffleboard table. last time i checked, the juke box totally rocked, too.

it may look like any dingy old bar when you walk in, but within a few minutes you'll see the light. ;-)

Old as this Green Room may look, some blog readers may remember that it used to be even *older* and located across the street.

I went to its old location just once or twice, in the early nineties when I was more nervous about things, and wondering just what I was doing in that joint. There were only three or so pool tables, and a small place in the back where you could play cards. The folks who played pool there were older local guys -- a bit rough looking. And it may me nervous when they kept looking at me and my friends. Now older, myself, I suspect they were giving us curious looks, not malicious ones. But it was definitely a cultural non-match.

One thing I admired about the old place was how patrons had worn through two layers of linoleum in rings around each table. The current site shows some of this wear, but not nearly as advanced as in the old joint.

I heart the Green Room! On days when my game is good, I get to feel like a hustler in there. And when my game is off, there's always the kick-ass juke box.

I stop by the Green Room most days for a beer or a game after work. The real treasure there is the people--a completely at-ease mixture of black, white, Latino, gay and straight, wealthy and less so, human and canine (it's a very dog-friendly bar). Joe Wilson, the owner, is well versed in the history and tradition of pool, and makes sure the Green Room is a true old-school pool hall; a place of community as well as a gaming room.

Well said, Brad. One thing to add, though -- for some reason the dogs at the Green Room never let me pet them, unlike every other dog in the universe.
