Fidel, Such Timing!

Fidelcastro From the AP:

HAVANA - An ailing, 81-year-old Fidel Castro resigned as Cuba's president Tuesday after nearly a half-century in power, saying he will not accept a new term when parliament meets Sunday.

Ah, for the love of Pete -- I'm going to Cuba on Sunday and he frickin' resigns just before I get there.  It looks like I won't be able to say I visited Cuba under Fidel.  Technically, anyway.  Dang.

I visited Cuba when Fidel was in power, but I didn't visit Cuba under Fidel. Was over on the American side at GITMO.

Cuba's pretty for the rich foreigners but still a nasty tyranny. What kind of country land mines its own property to keep its own citizens from escaping? A communist one, of course...

"I visited Cuba when Fidel was in power, but I didn't visit Cuba under Fidel." Ha!

I really look forward to getting this five-day peek at Cuba. I doubt we'll visit any of the foreigners-only resorts, and that will be fine by me. (From what I can tell, they're much like the other all-inclusive places I've visited with my parents in Mexico.) My understanding is that it will be gritty even for a foreigner with with money. Gritty with food and drink and transportation and freedom -- but still gritty.

I'm glad I'll be going with Dave -- an ally in dealing with the emotion-rousing onslaught of jinateros and jinateras who will want our money and opportunity-to-leave (without needing to brave a minefield).
