Babe, You Can Drive My Car

Babeyoucandrivemycar6Hilary finds herself behind the wheel of a (not very) large automobile.  And she may ask herself "how do I work this?"

This pic on Arthur Minnis Rd., on the way to Maple View Farms.

I'm not the biggest fan of their ice cream, but the drive out from any direction is so beautiful that it's almost always worth the trip.  On Saturday night, the lightning bugs put on their show above the fields.  It was lovely.

Two questions for you
: (1) do you call them "lightning bugs" or "fireflies" and (2) do you know whether their populations have grown or diminished over the last several decades?

I have heard both lightning bug and firefly interchangeably and I don't think there is a regional preference - though of course I always use the family name Lampyridiae. They seem to have made a resurgence of late, though about 3 decades back the bugs were in peril, especially around Maryland, when researchers at Johns Hopkins were studying luciferin (the light-emitting substance in the tail) and were offering kids a bounty of a nickel each per bug sent in.

I always call them lightning bugs, although "lightnin' bugs" is how I would actually say it.

You can take the girl out of the country and all that...

I say both.

I did a little online research on how that particular lexical item splits across the US, and it seems that it's pretty evenly divided among three categories: those who exclusively say "lightning bug," those who exclusively say "firefly," and those like me who say both.

Like Charles said, there's not much regional variation. But there is a little: the west coasters reported saying "firefly" exclusively more than other parts of the country.

"Yes," to both questions.

Well, now I have "Baby You Can Drive My Car" stuck in my head. Beep beep, beep beep, Yeah!

I say lighting bugs. I also say Hilary looks good driving your car. :-)

1: Both, I think.
2: No idea, but I hope not.

I say fireflies. But I'm not from around here.

fireflies. do you think the most excellent sci fi western series would have lasted even as long as it did, had it been called "lightening bug"?

Uh, I assume this picture was taken before you drove it into a concrete barrier?
