Kitten and Puppy -- Name One, Claim One, Tame One

Elimaybe
Grace found this smart and rambunctious kitten in a box at Weaver St.  "Take me!  Take me!" said the cat.  "What's your name?" asked Grace.  Replied the cat, "Up to you, babe."  Grace is now taking suggestions.  Already on (or off) the table:  Nookie, ("We call him") Tim, Chairman Meow, Meow Tse-Tung, Leukemia, Pot Roast.  In contention: Eli, Elvis (for the sideburns).

Puppie
Other friends have fun this lovely puppy which is up for adoption (naming included):

"Found Saturday in Durham out wandering on his own... He’s about 8 weeks old and probably has some chow and shepherd in his blood. Very friendly, mellowand gets along well with people and all sorts of animals. Right now he’s living with a nice foster family who has 2 dogs, 2 cats and iguana. We’d love to find a permanent family soon!"

If you're interested in the puppy, let me know and I'll pass you along to his foster parents.

Also in pet land -- my friend Hal is having cat issues.  Abby the Tabby won't come around anymore because a mean cat chases her off.  And what's more, the mean cat has been marking Hal's door.  Any suggestions?  I've been praying that the mean cat has a change of heart.  But Hal's psychiatrist thinks that cats are usually non-reformable, and she has a PhD and an MD.

I kinda like Meow Tse-Tung.. seems to suit him. I'm a sucker for puppies, but I've got critters coming out of my ears already!!

for abby the tabby, try getting some "nature's miracle" (or similar) from a pet store and spraying it on the marks. this stuff has enzymes that "eat" cat pee and make it not smell. also, consult a vet.

Thanks, Romani -- and pleased to meet you! I'm trying to recognize your mountain town from your pics, but no luck yet. Any hints?

Lisa -- thanks for the tips on the cleaning stuff. And the vet. Wait -- what do I ask the vet?!

try setting moth balls on his porch - cats hate the smell of those and while it may stop the marking i don't know if his Abby the Tabby will come back...

good luck!

just present the problem to the vet as you have presented it here and see if they have any suggestions. in fact, i'd recommend trying to get hold of xta's vet-- she specializes in cats and probably knows a heck of a lot more about cat behavior than most other people in the triangle.

One of my favorite B. Kliban cat cartoons is of two cats with Chairman Mao hats on, and they're looking at a mouse and his droppings, and saying "Mousie Dung." Hee.

The puppy is SO CUTE. And the kitty too--what big ears he has!

Regarding the mean cat: figure out what time of day he comes by, and be waiting with a hose and a nozzle sprayer. Effective and satisfying.

A hint.. let's see. Population around 600, we have spas (sorta) and we're about half way between Asheville and Knoxville :)

1) The "mean cat" is not being mean. He's just being dominant. He's saying, "Hey, check me out. This is MY place too. I want some lovin' too."

2) The most efficient way to get rid of him is to scare the guy off - without scaring off Abby. Garden hose? Maybe, if you've got the patience to stalk him. But he may take it as a challenge and come back.

When Mir was a kitten and I was training him, he sat motionless while I sprayed water - IN HIS FACE - which is a no-no. He loved taunting me. It was play for him.

3) Catch the sprayer and get him fixed.

4) That pup looks sad and vulnerable. He's really tugging at my heartstrings.

Hey. I just started reading your blog, because I love pugs though I am sadly not an owner. Lovely site and dog though.
