Our auditorium was behind the big pillars, and there I had my directoral debut in "The Wizard of Oz." Susan Brewer starred in the part of Dorothy. Annette Owenby played the Wicked Witch of the West, while Karen Wood played Glinda the Good Witch of the North. Somehow, I get more hazy about the male characters. I think that the Kenny Edmundsen, Peter Ford, and Steve Richardson played the parts of the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the Straw Man; and Gerald Somebody played the Wizard. As the curtain dropped, we played Elton John's "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road" whose lyrics were completely lost on my 7th grade self. On another occasion in this auditorium, I performed Mozart's "Sonata Facile" (before I learned that "facile" meant "easy"). Notwithstanding my moments of glory, there were also a bajillion grade school humiliations in that building and on its grounds, but I'll skip those for now. Today, the building is mothballed, waiting for someone to come with dollars for adaptive reuse.
